The 13th Kochi International Triennial Exhibition of Prints
The Kochi international triennial exhibition of prints and Tosa washi
Tosa washi is said to have a thousand-year history.
Kochi is historically rich in forests and clear streams, which are essential for making Tosa washi. These elements have sustainined the long history of Tosa washi until today.
The Kochi international triennial exhibition of prints began in 1990, with the hope of creating magnificent print works using Tosa washi paper and further developing both washi and printmaking cultures,
As its name suggests, this exhibition is held once every three years.
With each iteration, high-quality works from around the world gather, making it an internationally acclaimed exhibition.
Since the exhibition is hosted in Kochi, a world-class producer of Japanese traditional paper, artwork submissions are limited to those that use paper as the primary material.

Tosa Washi
Learning Tosa Washi
“Tosa Washi” is counted among the three major types of Japanese paper alongside “Echizen Washi”and “Mino Washi”, and is highly regarded both domestically and internationally for its wide variety and durability.
The earliest extant record concerning Tosa washi paper dates back to a book from 927. Throughout its long history, the development of Tosa washi has been supported by the nature of Tosa and the wisdom of our ancestors.
In particular, the papermaking tools and techniques devised by Tosa’s forebears contributed to the development of the paper industry throughout Japan from the late 1800s to the early 1900s.
In 1976, Tosa Washi was designated a National Traditional Craft.
Even today, Tosa washi continues to be used for the restoration of cultural properties and in artworks.
